Report of the Executive Council

Name of document:

Report of the Executive Council

Type of document:

Report

Summary of the data:

This extract of a Report of the Executive Council outlines information regarding the upcoming treaty negotiations between William Benjamin Robinson and the Native Bands in the Lake Huron and Lake Superior regions. The Report notes a number of provisions of which the Commissioner of Crown Lands was to communicate to Robinson.

Firstly, the excerpt indicates that the total amount available for the negotiations was £7500. Additionally, the Capital sum available was £25, 000, which would allow for an interest payment of £1500 yearly in the form of a perpetual annuity. Secondly, the exctract stipulates that the number of claimants must not fall below 600 or a deduction of £2.10.00 a head would be required. This compensation would be provided in exchange for the surrender of Native claims to the North and Northeastern coasts of Lake Huron and Superior, or as many miles inland from the coasts as possible. According to the extract, the most important territory was Mica Bay and Michipicoten as this was where the Quebec Mining Company had begun operations.

Finally, the excerpt specifies that it would be the preference of the Executive Council that the compensation be distributed in the form of monies rather than presents and Robinson should “carefully abstain from expressing any opinion on a subject with which Her Majesty’s Imperial Government can alone deal” (4).
