Letter from A.McDonnell to Mr. Cameron

Name of document:

Letter from A. McDonnell to Mr. Cameron

Type of document:

Primary documentation, letter, National Archives of Canada

Summary of the data:

A. McDonnell wrote this letter, to a Mr. Cameron on April 9th 1852, on behalf of the Lake Superior First Nations explaining that they were not happy with the reserves they received under the Robinson-Superior Treaty, 1850. According to McDonnell the lands granted to the First Nations in the Lake Superior area were not what they expected based on the treaty negotiations. According to those in the region, Chief Peau de Chat misrepresented their interests during said negotiations.

McDonnell also writes about the 'half-breeds' who settled in Sault Ste. Marie who were not receiving payments or presents from the Government. According to McDonnell, these people should be awarded grants of land, however, Robinson explained that to give the 'half-breeds' said land would require a "special act of parliament" (McDonnell para. 2). Finally he tells a story of a man named Biron who married an Aboriginal woman and was given a piece of land where he lived for 40 years, however, a man named Johnson purchased that land from the Agent of Crown Lands and it was assumed that Biron would surrender his place of residence.
